Tom Ford has created this film in a way that is artistically creative and disinctive. It takes a poetic influence and draws attention to minute details in a strikingly visual way.
The film is set in 1962. George Falconer (Colin Firth), an English professor, has recently lost his partner Jim who died in a car accident many months before. The film focuses on one day of George's life- the day that he is planning to be his last. The film follows George through his suicide preparations and introduces people who are part of his life and concerned for his welfare. These people include a Spanish male who has recently arrived in America, his old friend Charley and one of his students named Kenny Potter.

Benjamin Braddock has recently graduated from college and returns home to California. He begins an affair with the wife of his parent's business partner Mrs Robinson. She warns Ben to stay away from her daughter Elaine but after encouragement from Mr Robinson he takes her out on a date. It then becomes impossible when Ben falls for Mrs Robinson's Daughter Elaine. The affair is then revealed causing Elaine's and his relationship to end. However, he is not willing to give up and pursues her.

A struggling writer called Paul Varjak moves into the flat above Holly Golightly. To the outside world Holly is a glamorous, sexy, sophisticated and stylish woman but alone in her appartment, she is ditzy, quirky and clumsy. After a while Paul Varjak falls in love with Holly but she continues to form relationships with millionaires and rich men until eventually she falls for the writer.

A British teacher called Humbert comes to the US for work and rents a room in a house owned by Charlotte Haze. After losing his summer love at 14 and never fully getting over it, he becomes infatuated with Charlotte's daughter Delores (Lolita). He marries Charlotte as a way to get close to Lolita, despite the fact he actually dislikes her. The mother then dies which results in Humbert becoming Lolita's Stepfather. They begin travelling through the US pretending to be stepfather and daughter despite the fact a romance has started. They suspect they are being followed by the police, but, their follower turns out to be a man that Lolita then falls for. The mixture of guilt and jealously then turn Humbert to become emotionally unstable.
